Audrey Napanangka Martin
(Yuendumu N.T.)

“What is Aboriginal
Culture today?” is an issue vexing many governments and concerned
individuals. The exhibition gives a visual perspective of the dichotomy
between Rural (Desert) and Metro, mono and plural, traditional and
modern
by bringing together aspects of contemporary Aboriginal Art at the
Collingwood Gallery Smith Street.
Opening on Sunday 2pm 23rd February to 8th March, the exhibition works
can be previewed from Friday 21st. The Featured artist is Audrey Napanangka
Martin whose contemporary traditionalism is still apart of today’s
culture with Maureen Hudson, Julianne Turner, Wally Evans, Amy Dixon
and others all from the Mt Theo outstation 400 k NW of Alice Springs.
The local artists are Bea Edwards, Kunda Beamo and Patricia Tolputt
(and others) from the eastern suburbs of Victoria. These works are different
in form and content, pointing to the influence of other cultures and
learning.
Both
are contemporary Aboriginal and at the apex of our cultural understand
today.
